With Lockdown 2.0 just around the corner, it’s high time to amp up your support for the independent music scene – an industry that has been one of the hardest hit during this difficult period. One of the ways to do this is by tuning into public and Internet radio to hear your favourite artists and labels on the airwaves. Many of these stations are listener supported: help them do what no mainstream radio is doing by pledging your listenership and financial support.



An FM radio station in Bristol and available to listen online in locations further afield, SWU has recently re-launched with a red hot roster of established talent and up-and-comers – a reflection of the people that make music happen in the city. Established in 2011, NTS has been a trailblazer in the underground music scene ever since its inception. Broadcasting from all over the world – London, Manchester, Los Angeles, Berlin, Shanghai, to name just a few cities they’ve transmitted from – they’ve become fast favourites because of their variety. Charlie Bones’ daily breakfast show and residencies from the likes of Moxie, Shanti Celeste and Jamie XX a special guest shows and live gig broadcasts keep them at the cutting edge of alternative music.



Another Bristol station making waves, Noods broadcasts daily from the heart of Stokes Croft and dips their toes into dance music, world sounds and anything in between. Fresh from a brand revamp, you can also hear from their esteemed resident DJs – such as Manami, Mix Nights alumni, Bruce and Ellie Stokes – on their newly-established FM station.


Rinse FM

Beginning life as pirate radio in the 90s, Rinse FM was at the forefront of bringing grime to listeners before it garnered the mainstream popularity it has now. In its infancy, it provided a platform for little-known artists as Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Skepta. Since then, it has widened its streaming net to feature selectors like Skream, Ben UFO and Fabio & Grooverider taking centre stage.



Based out of Peckham, Balamii has been throwing their weight behind the UK underground scene since 2014 and has since grown to be not only an Internet radio station for the most original DJs, but also an events outfit and video and editorial production house. On the Balamii airwaves is where you might have first heard of now-renowned artists like Novelist, HAAi, NiNE8 COLLECTIVE and Folamour.
